International Students

International students from around the world come to NYU SPS to study in their fields of interest, acquire industry expertise, become “New Yorkers” and share their cultures in a diverse and welcoming campus community.

International Student Support Center

The International Student Support Center (ISSC) provides support to international and multinational students to help them succeed in their graduate and undergraduate studies and to adjust to life in the U.S. It connects them to internal and external communities that ease their transition to life in New York City and studies at NYU SPS.

Tutoring

Tutoring

The Center provides one-on-one support for SPS international and multinational students to discuss their writing and language issues. Faculty tutors are on hand to help students work on improving class assignments. Fifty-minute sessions can focus on specific areas such as grammar and writing; presentation preparation; pronunciation; and more.

Students can book their own appointments via NYU Connect; search for the ISSC, select the type of appointment desired, and book an available session.

You can view some helpful appointment scheduling by following the link below, but if you encounter issues or otherwise need assistance, please feel free to email us at sps.issc@nyu.edu, call us at (212) 992-3208, or stop by the ISSC, Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Remote Tutoring

Virtual tutoring sessions take place via Zoom technology and students will need access to a computer with microphone capability.  We also highly recommend the computer have use of a camera to enhance the experience.

In Person Tutoring

In person tutoring sessions take place at the ISSC at 11 W. 42nd Street, 10th Floor, or at the SPS Building at 7 E 12th Street.

Academic Workshops

The Center offers two different workshop series—Academic Enhancement Workshops and the Academic Success Workshops. The former are designed to refine skills and to provide students with the necessary tools to fully participate in the U.S. academic experience. The latter focus on helping students to improve their academic English language skills. Students learn to better organize their ideas, use citations effectively, and support opinions in speaking and writing. Workshops focus on pronunciation, presentation, conversational skills, grammar, sentence structure, and vocabulary. These skills prepare students to function comfortably in their classes and in other situations where formal written and spoken English are required.

You can view and register for upcoming workshops via NYU Engage. Look for more detailed workshop information in weekly ISSC email announcements. Register early to secure a spot!

Events and Activities

The Center offers intercultural discussions and other conversation events that serve as opportunities for international students to engage with others on topics of interest in an informal setting. We also host numerous social and cultural events throughout the year, including trips to venture out and explore New York City. Previous events have included trips to the New York City Ballet, the Metropolitan Opera, and the New York Philharmonic, as well as New York City Football Club games at Yankee Stadium and New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets games. Our Summer in New York City Series events have taken students to Astoria Park in Queens, Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, Brooklyn Bridge Park and more. View and register for upcoming events via NYU Engage.  We hope you'll join us!

SPS International Club

The SPS International Club is a student organization that develops activities for all SPS students. It serves to provide a global platform for communication, networking, and increased mutual understanding. In the past, the club has organized holiday celebrations, a Global Crafts event, an International Game Night, annual Global Village events, and more. Join the club or view upcoming events via NYU Engage.

ISSC Lounge

The ISSC Lounge, located within the Center, welcomes all NYU SPS students and serves as a hub for taking part in intercultural exchange, meeting students from other programs, and mingling with administrators and faculty members. The ISSC is rich with opportunities for building and sustaining rewarding friendships through cultural conversations, social events, community outings, the NYU SPS International Club, and more.

Our international students are supported by the Office of Global Services and can also turn to the NYU International Student Center.

NYU Resources for International Students

While the ISSC provides academic and social support, it is the NYU Office of Global Services (OGS) that provides visa and immigration guidance.  The OGS website has a wealth of information on how to obtain and maintain your student visa, how to plan your trip, U.S. arrival requirements, employment, tax, and more.

The NYU International Student Center, located on the 7th floor of the Kimmel Center, also provides an alternative for students looking for events and programs that foster meaningful connections across our global communities.

We are here to help!

We are here to be your home away from home! Visit the Center and become acquainted with all that it has to offer. We look forward to meeting you and encourage you to make the most of our services!
