MS in Real Estate Development


The M.S. in Real Estate Development (MSRED) provides students with the knowledge and tools necessary to succeed in the dynamic industry of real estate development. The core development courses provide a strong foundation and understanding of the development process; finance of development projects; legal, land use and regulatory frameworks; design and construction; and market analysis and technology. The program provides students with flexibility. The degree can be completed part-time, full-time, or in an accelerated full-time format in 13 months or more.

The MSRED program has three concentrations with specialized tier courses. These concentrations are:

  1. The business of development, which includes entrepreneurship and public private partnerships.

  2. Sustainable development such as green buildings, and infrastructure and resilience.

  3. Global development, such as comparative international real estate development and advanced real estate development and investment practices.

  4. Electives that provide the opportunity for students to explore growing market niches such as affordable housing, international development finance, data analytics and economic development.

The program offers concentrations that allow you to tailor your curriculum and specialize in a particular field of the real estate industry.



To complete their course of study, students are required to complete a capstone course to demonstrate their comprehension of all prior courses undertaken in the program.

Core Curriculum

The core curriculum is designed to provide you with a deep and broad foundation that supports concentration course work and serves you throughout your career. Students are required to take all of the following courses.

Core Curriculum: Tier I

Tier I courses provide a fundamental understanding of the economic and financial aspects of real estate development, familiarity with the legal issues that shape the development process, and an exploration of the methods and techniques in economics and market analysis. Students are required to take all courses listed below.

Core Curriculum: Tier II

Tier II courses analyze design, construction methods, valuation approaches within the development process, and the range of federal, state, and local regulations governing site planning and feasibility. Students are required to take all courses listed below.


Students are required to select courses in any combination of the following: (a) from the list below, (b) from a course(s) within another concentration in this program or (c) with permission from the Program Director, a course(s) from the M.S. in Construction Management or the M.S. in Real Estate (pending some exceptions) degree programs. Please note that not all courses are offered every semester.

We require transcripts from all institutions where college credit was received.


For Academic Year 2020-2021

Application Fee $150

Tuition depends on the number of credit hours a student enrolls in each semester. A part-time student taking 6 credit hours is billed $13,778 for tuition and fees for a semester. A full-time student taking 12 credit hours is billed $22,699 for tuition and fees for a semester. For a full breakdown of tuition and fees visit the Bursar's website.

Language Proficiency

TOEFL scores are required for applicants who did not complete an undergraduate degree in the United States or in a country where the only primary language is not English.  Successful candidates achieve a minimum score of 110 on the Internet-based test.

For the IELTS, a minimum overall band score of at least 8 is recommended.

NYUSPS does not prohibit applicants with lower TOEFL/IELTS scores from applying for admission since many factors influence the admissions decision. 

Pearson Versant English Placement Test (VEPT)

If an international applicant has not achieved the minimum scores as described above, they are required to participate in the VEPT, a 50-minute online test that evaluates English language proficiency.
