How Can the Yellow Ribbon Program Help Veterans Earn or Complete Their College Degree?

The Yellow Ribbon Program is a feature of the Post 9/11 GI Bill. If your tuition exceeds what the Veterans Administration (VA) can pay and your school is a participant in the Yellow Ribbon Program, the unpaid difference could be picked up by your school and the VA.

MILITARY VETERAN SUCCESS STORY

Shakia Michelle Rose ‘20

Shakia Michelle Rose joined the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC), and later the Army Reserves while still in high school. Since 2011, she has been based in Afghanistan, working first as a Department of Defense civilian and then for a defense contractor. While she was extremely busy and often subjected to the dangers of working in a war zone, Shakia decided to complete her bachelor’s degree online through the NYU SPS Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies (DAUS). As a veteran and staff sergeant in the Reserves, she received Yellow Ribbon benefits to help pay for her education. Her online experience made it easy for her to take classes no matter what the circumstance. Shakia, made Dean’s List, and joined the NYU chapter of Alpha Sigma Lamda Honor Society. She was chosen as the NYU SPS undergraduate convocation speaker and hopes to utilize the skills she has acquired through DAUS in a leadership/management role in the Middle East.
